Garden Center Associate Job Description

Typical responsibilities include, watering, weeding, dead-heading, pruning, loading and unloading of deliveries, setting up displays, maintaining clean and organized aisles, tables, and grounds, and operating POS systems (cash register).

• • Qualifications and Requirements

Basic horticultural knowledge preferred- A basic understanding of horticulture including, plant identification, watering needs, and care requirements for various types of flowers, shrubs, trees, and ornamentals.

• • Experience

Retail Garden experience preferred, but not required.

• • Physicality

Ability to perform manual labor, including lifting heavy items (often 20-50 lbs. repeatedly) bending, crouching, and standing for long periods of time. Must be comfortable working in various weather conditions including sun, rain and heat (up to 100°F+)

• • Garden Tool Proficiency

Garden Tool Proficiency- familiarity with or ability to learn how to operate various types of garden tools and equipment including hoses, pruners, blowers, rakes, shovels, etc.

• • Key Skills 

Customer Service- Ability to assist customers with plant selection and placement as well as provide care information, advice, and answering questions. 

Merchandising- skills in organizing, stocking, and displaying plants in an aesthetic yet functional manner to contribute to the overall sales appearances of items.

• • Communication 

Strong interpersonal skills to interact with customers and colleagues.

• • Safety Conscious

Understanding basic safety principles and protocols especially when handling tools, chemicals, or fertilizers.
